Pickleball is a fun mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong that’s been around since 1965. Over 50 years later, this sport continues to entertain friends and family across the United States. If you want to join in on the fun, don’t worry—you only need a few key components. This comprehensive guide will show you what equipment you need to play pickleball the right way.
Court
A good pickleball court should be 20 feet wide and about 40 feet in length, similar to a doubles badminton court. If you already have a badminton court or even a tennis court, you can easily convert it into a pickleball court because of their similar layout. Pickleball courts need right and left service areas on each side of the net, as well as distinct sidelines and a 7-foot nonvolley zone in the center.
Net
Pickleball nets hang slightly lower than your typical tennis court net. The net on your pickleball court needs to be 36 inches high on the ends as well as in the middle.
Paddle
Although pickleball is a mix of tennis and ping-pong, you can’t use those paddles for pickleball. The size of a pickleball paddle is typically 8 inches wide and 15 inches long.
Pickleball
Last but not least, you’ll need a pickleball, which is very similar to a wiffle ball. They are made of durable yet lightweight plastic and are filled with holes. There is a clear distinction between a pickleball used for outdoor courts, and ones used for indoor courts. Make sure the pickleball you choose is right for the environment you’re playing in. Your pickleball also needs to be USAPA approved to play a proper game.
